Everything You Need to Know About Asbestos
In recent years, health and safety have been a number one priority for everyone. But did you know that there is quite a number of naturally occurring materials that are hazardous to your health? These materials – such as mercury, arsenic, silica, and pyrite – can cause quite a lot of damage to your health. However, the most prevalent out of all of them is asbestos.
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a fibrous silicate mineral. It is a heat-resistant material that has been in use as a ceramic strengthener and fireproofer ever since the Stone Age. Throughout the centuries people have found it useful. Because of the technological advancements of the Industrial Revolution, its use has been made widespread in construction, clothing, and transportation.
Useful, yet hazardous
In the late 19th century, it was as if asbestos would become a mainstay in various industries. But even during the stage when it was beginning to be widely-used there were some who had discovered the potential damage it could cause. How could a material, so useful and versatile, be hazardous for your health?
A dangerous discovery
In 1899, Doctor Montague Murray found out the negative effects asbestos could cause to one’s health.
Dr. Murray, who was working at Charing Cross Hospital in London, treated a 33-year-old patient who came to him for what seemed to be bronchitis. However the patient also brought up the fact that nine of his coworkers – all of whom had been working with asbestos – had all died due to the same condition he was suffering.
Less than a year later, the patient passed away. Examining the patient’s body, Dr. Murray found heavy scarring in the lungs. This was the first recorded instance of asbestosis, and the first recorded death because of asbestos.
Damage control for asbestos
Since the discovery of how hazardous asbestos can be, many governments have since banned or put the material under heavy regulation. In late-2003, Australian authorities put a ban on all imports and usage of asbestos. The National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) have put strict guidelines in place to focus on proper health and safety measures for asbestos removal, detection, and management. Although it does not affect asbestos products that were already in-use at the time, it has since affected how the material is handled and disposed of.

Being uninformed I just assumed you can rip walls down, like they do on the tv show the block, without consequence. Ryno took the time to explain the dangers and point out areas in the house that were asbestos. He was prompt, clean and efficient in the removal. Very professional. Thanks again guys”
